The benefits of saline

____

Saline (sodium chloride) is a mineral found naturally in the earth that excels at breaking up and thinning mucus when used in the right concentration. Doctors regularly recommend the use of saline (via nasal drops for infants and children, and sprays and neti pots for teens and adults) when there is a need to clean and clear the nasal cavity. When infused into a moist wipe like Boogie Wipes and Puffs Fresh Faces, saline acts in much the same way, making mucus easier to wipe away while remaining gentle enough to comfort stuffy noses. Because saline is natural and hypoallergenic, side effects are minimal.

Saline also has a place on vanities and in washrooms alike. Because saline is made from salt, it shares many of the same beautifying qualities as sodium chloride. In addition to saline’s unique ability to gently clean, it can also soothe and smooth even the most delicate skin without irritation.

When delivered with aloe and vitamin E in a moist tissue like Puffs Fresh Faces, it’s easy to benefit from the power of saline.

The history of saline

____

Saline solution, in its various concentrations, has been used for centuries in both personal care and for medicinal purposes. It has been used to exfoliate skin, free up nasal passages, clean wounds and treat dehydration.

In Biblical times, the Dead Sea, which lies at the borders of Jordan and Israel, was considered one of the first health spas. Its intense salinity (8.6 times saltier than the ocean), continues to attract visitors from around the world for its healing properties and has even inspired global modern day skin care lines.

In terms of medicinal treatments, nasal irrigation (the process by which saline is washed through the nasal cavity and then blown out), can be traced back to ancient Hindu times. This practice is still widely used today via neti pots, saline nasal sprays, nebulizers, and Saline wipes.

Early documentation also shows how saline was used to treat dehydration in blue cholera sufferers during the epidemic that swept over Europe in 1831. Some years later in eastern Bavaria, saline solutions were being used in compresses to alleviate inflammation.
